Why did you select the inspiration pieces? I really like Vincent van Gogh and I think his portraits are kind of amusing. He looks so serious but look at his art caption. He takes different portraits in his different hats then titles the painting with the hat! Also as soon as you see his portrait you dont really have to even have to see a label with the artists name on it his technique is so specific in all of his paintings. 2. Why did you select the media to create your self-portrait? I love charcoal! I love messing around with it because i can erase it if I want to and I can shade easily with it. 3. What challenges did you face in creating your self-portrait and how did you overcome them? I am a perfectionist and I didnt have tons of time to do this portrait so its eating me up inside how much it looks like a 10 yr old drew it. However I kind of like the way the face almost seems distorted not like an actual face but a character of one. Also the charcoal gets really messy and smuges a lot and if you lean on the charcoal it erases. 4. How does this piece represent you? I like the photo so I like my drawing. It represents me because it is me! I tried (i hope i dont actually look like that) but I had a fun time creating a portrait that looks kind of funny. 5. What elements and principles of art did you apply in this work? Elements: I used line and texture for the hair, the color/value was black, Principles: my eyes in proportion to my face are a tad bigger. The finished drawing is zoomed in compared to the photo used. 6. Did you enjoy working on this project? I did enjoy it. At first I wanted to paint a nice self portrait but realized I was cut for time so I decided to sketch out my face first with pencil then go over with charcoal add some shading maybe some highlight here and there. 7. What do you think of your final artwork? Its okay, is it my best no but I enjoy it! ______________________________________________________________________ 1. 2. 3.

Module 16

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met? I was expecting just to learn a little bit more about art and throughout this course I think I have learned a lot. I have learned the culture behind certain arts of different time periods. I actually enjoyed watching some of the films that were required of us to watch. 2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your intial posting? I actually continue to agree with my original posting but I believe art can be anything really and anyone can create art. I believe art is away of expressing oneself whether through a painting, a sculpture or absolutely anything! It can be made accidently or be made through a long planned out process. Not all art must have meaning and not all art is from the audiences’ eye understood. Art is supposed to make you think. 3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so? I didn’t have a specific artists then that was my favorite and to be honest I still do not have one. For me there is no one artist that captures my full attention. I feel as though if I like a piece of art work I like it. I have not found an artist yet that has almost a whole collection of artwork that I am entirely in love with. 4. Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different? I have taken online courses before and they are time consuming. This course however was very time consuming I felt overwhelmed quite often. I like this online course however and I liked how our own outside of class projects had to be incorporated with doing online work. I do wish however this class didn’t have so many accounts that had to be use such as blogger and the photo one its just too much. I think just used the discussion board would be fine without having to blog.
