Module 15 Self Portrait

The Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam, Netherlands 1. Self-portrait with straw hat Paris: (March 1887 - June 1887) by Vincent van Gogh, Van Gogh Museum Oil on cardboard 40.5 x 32.5 cm. 2. Self-portrait with grey felt hat Paris: (September 1887 - October 1887) by Vincent van Gogh, Van Gogh Museum Oil on canvas 44.0 x 37.5 cm. 3. Self-portrait with pipe Paris: (September 1886 - November 1886) by Vincent van Gogh, Van Gogh Museum Oil on canvas 46.0 x 38.0 cm. ____________________________________________________________________ 1. 2. 3. ____________________________________________________________________ SELF PORTRAIT Create a reflection journal on your Blog and answer the following questions: 1. Why did you select the inspiration pieces? I really like Vincent van Gogh and I think his portraits are kind of amusing. He looks so serious but look at his art caption. He takes different portraits in his different hats then titles the painting with the hat! Also as soon as you see his portrait you dont really have to even have to see a label with the artists name on it his technique is so specific in all of his paintings. 2. Why did you select the media to create your self-portrait? I love charcoal! I love messing around with it because i can erase it if I want to and I can shade easily with it. 3. What challenges did you face in creating your self-portrait and how did you overcome them? I am a perfectionist and I didnt have tons of time to do this portrait so its eating me up inside how much it looks like a 10 yr old drew it. However I kind of like the way the face almost seems distorted not like an actual face but a character of one. Also the charcoal gets really messy and smuges a lot and if you lean on the charcoal it erases. 4. How does this piece represent you? I like the photo so I like my drawing. It represents me because it is me! I tried (i hope i dont actually look like that) but I had a fun time creating a portrait that looks kind of funny. 5. What elements and principles of art did you apply in this work? Elements: I used line and texture for the hair, the color/value was black, Principles: my eyes in proportion to my face are a tad bigger. The finished drawing is zoomed in compared to the photo used. 6. Did you enjoy working on this project? I did enjoy it. At first I wanted to paint a nice self portrait but realized I was cut for time so I decided to sketch out my face first with pencil then go over with charcoal add some shading maybe some highlight here and there. 7. What do you think of your final artwork? Its okay, is it my best no but I enjoy it! ______________________________________________________________________ 1. 2. 3.

Module 16

1. What were you expectations for this course and where they met? I was expecting just to learn a little bit more about art and throughout this course I think I have learned a lot. I have learned the culture behind certain arts of different time periods. I actually enjoyed watching some of the films that were required of us to watch. 2. Now that you've been through this course, What is art? How would you define it now compared to your intial posting? I actually continue to agree with my original posting but I believe art can be anything really and anyone can create art. I believe art is away of expressing oneself whether through a painting, a sculpture or absolutely anything! It can be made accidently or be made through a long planned out process. Not all art must have meaning and not all art is from the audiences’ eye understood. Art is supposed to make you think. 3. Who was your favorite artist in your original posting and who is your favorite visual artist now? If there is a difference, why do you think so? If you have the same favorite artist, why do you think so? I didn’t have a specific artists then that was my favorite and to be honest I still do not have one. For me there is no one artist that captures my full attention. I feel as though if I like a piece of art work I like it. I have not found an artist yet that has almost a whole collection of artwork that I am entirely in love with. 4. Now that you've completed this course, how do you feel about taking an online course? Is your answer the same as it was in your first posting? How is it the same or different? I have taken online courses before and they are time consuming. This course however was very time consuming I felt overwhelmed quite often. I like this online course however and I liked how our own outside of class projects had to be incorporated with doing online work. I do wish however this class didn’t have so many accounts that had to be use such as blogger and the photo one its just too much. I think just used the discussion board would be fine without having to blog.

Art Project #4

The theme of my art project is based on war and the title of my art work is called "Art at War" Here are the steps that lead me to my finish art piece. 1. I chose a theme that I love and I didnt want to explore a type of style of art like cubism or surrealism or study one specific artists artworks. I chose the theme of war because not necessarily am I huge fan of history but I always wanted to be a marine and we dont know what war is actually like if we arent an enlisted soldier so we depict what war is like through images such as real photographs and paintings. I chose the theme of war to explore how "war" has changed throughout history. How "war" has become advanced. 2. I then wrote down all of the most important battles or wars fought through out history that were considered a main event. 3. I then searched each battle or war under google images for painting that would best represent what war looked like at the time (this allows for you to see the development of war, ex: the weapons used, the soldiers clothing, their form of transportation, etc.) 4.I then put these battles or wars into time line sequential order 5. I made sure that each painting I found met all of the requirements; artist, medium, yr, title etc. 6. For each I then gave an explanation or reasoning as to why I chose this specific battle or war. What were the facts that made it an important event in history. 7. Then for each I gave a description whith some (very little) background knowledge of the paintings history. I described only what I saw in the painting (instead of saying i see a soldier fighting with another soldier, i had described the union in the blue jacket fighting with a soldier holding his confederate flag) - there is no opinion included 8. I then used the formal art analysis to depict the principles and elements of each painting. 9. It was difficult for my to give my own personal interpretation on some of these pieces of art work because its not really an opinionated topic. Especially when you see a painting of a war that took placed hundreds of years ago because I was not around I just believe what I see and believe thats what war really appeared as. 10. I then finished by watching the instructed films and doing the discussion on them I chose this particular background for my powerpoint slideshow because it has a tattered grungy look to it. It has a sort outdated and dark feel to it and most of the pictures I applied to this project are old historical events. I chose the font that I did because it gave to me resembled old fashion writing or the writing I would see in a newspaper.

Module 13 and 14

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. Tate Modern: Contemporary art museum -new art for a new society -things professional artists probably wouldn’t understand (outsider) -stand for change -museum that spoke very directly to its audience- a sense of confidence -correcting what a new society was ready for - look through a present day eye so there wouldn’t be one tate view -trendy art, feel good factor -quality of being unfinished, being open, and of being less formal -big industrial space-its rough and casual -people laying on the floor looking at their mirrored reflection -metal bunk beds -a giant sun -relational aesthetics how the audience relates to art and relates to each other West Coast Pop Art -low brow hard to categorize -to some extent has a history of folk art -after the war a lot had an impact on art -artists job is to just create the art, let the audience and critiques categorize the art -rock posters in the 60s bright and visual psychedelic -earlier drug culture before the Vietnam war started comics -a lot of stuff moving, never standing still -abstract feelings of humor -internet brought about awareness of work -subcultural art forms blossoming all new and exciting -in your face and graphic An Acquiring Mind: -Congo man -owns 2 madevil manuscripts -woman seen from the back -aware that the way they display the art work changes history -some of the most fragile works are the textiles- conservaters mount them on display -x-rays to look at damage or weak areas of a sculpture -metal will tell you what area of the world they came from 2. Do the videos relate to the creation of your Art Exhibition project? If yes, explain how. If no, explain why not. In my opinion I did not see any real relevance between the videos and my theme. My theme is about war a serious topic so it had nothing to do with modern art or the pop art. In all honesty, the third film on an acquiring mind kind of lost me but I still did not see any relevance to the topic of war and such. 3. What is your opinion of the films? Do they add depth to understanding of the art concepts you practiced while creating your curation project? I really like the modern art first film and the pop culture film. I enjoy pop culture because it explores an element that most artists I feel are afraid to explore. It can take serious matters and turn them goofy it can be of random things put together that you wont get and your not supposed to. There is something about the film and about modern art in general that I love but im not sure how to describe it or what it is exactly that attracts me to it so much. Its unique its inspiring. The third film an acquiring mind was too tiring and boring to me. It needed pizazz it needed some pop culture! Did they give me depth to understanding; It gave me an idea of how I really needed to dig into my project and pull out the details as to why I chose the theme I did.

Module 12

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above. I chose these two videos at random, no specific reasoning 2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. Andy Warhol: -Ten Lizes same image repeated -1960 commercial artists, became a famous painter -took newspaper clips and enlarged with a projector-used stencils and acrylic paints -series on Marilyn Monroe face -picked the most pervasive images- cropped them, simplified them, colored them, uncolored them and multiplied them -Elizabeth taylor- Cleopatra -to send an photo through a silk screen the original image must be enlarged several times, the contrasts can then be heightened or turned down at will, originally made of silk now made of a mesh -silk screen printing enabled him a brilliant idea -nearly an image, and an image of an image -a consumer product like coca-cola or campells coup -Jackie Kennedys series -obsessed by the idea of celebrity -published his own magazine, made a film with liz taylor -used poloroids -death one of his main themes Uncertainty: Modernity and Art: -art has its own memory of itself -bricks are a phase of modern art -modern art responds to modern life -1930s Nazism uncertainty seen as a sickness -feeling we live with in modern life is doubt; nothing is pure, nothing lasts, can never be sure what we are -abstract art is open ended- no rules -1960s consumerism -no values except the values of the free market -hyper present; china -chinas economy grows 10% a yr -modern art communicates chaos, anxiety, and above all, uncertainty. 3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text? The artists of popculture found visual material in the mundane, mass-produced objects and images such as comic books, advertising, billboards, and packaging. For example Andy Warhol who created an enormous output of prints, paintings, and sculptures. He directed the production of many avant- garde films, featuring actors with names such as Viva, Ultra Violet, and International Velvet. To get to where modern art is today, Art has passed through many stages and has explored many different types of styles of art. Western ideas about art were being taken up in the 19th century and were adopted by many cultures around the world. 4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts? I liked the film on Andy Warhol however I found his work to be sort of blanned. I felt as though he could have gone even further with his works other then just taking someone elses original photo then multiplying it on silk screen and then putting paint on it. I think in my own personal opinion the work is boring and very simply done. I did like however how he took clips and glimpses from newspaper clippings and magazines and blew those images up. It is kind of like keeping history and consumer goods alive. I think the film went into more depth on how different cultures explored at different times the way to modern art. It explored Natzism and how China explored modern art.

Module 1 Project 4

Step 1: The Exhibition Questions about the exhibit: 1. What is the title of the exhibit? Burchfield Penny 2. What is the theme of the exhibition? The exhibition I took most interest in was called The Likeness of being (Portraits), artist Philip Burke Step 2: The Gallery Questions about the physical space: 1. What type of lighting is used? In some areas, dimed lighting was present but the bigger the open space the brighter the light exposure 2. What colors are used on the walls? The walls of this exhibit were plain white which made the art work stand out 3. What materials are used in the interior artchitecture of the space? The architecture had high walls presenting lots of big artwork on the walls, there are different room presenting different themed pieces of art from different artists. An enclosed room to observe another themed exhibition as well as an upstairs unit with a wall separating two more exhibitions. 4. How is the movement of the viewer through the gallery space? The movement was like a maze, as walking through you hit walls which made you have to go in a different direction. Step 3: The Artwork Questions about the artwork: 1. How are the artworks organized? They were organized in themes political figures were placed together, different groups of artists (ex. The beatles) placed together. 2. How are the artrworks similar? Mostly all of the portraits consist of bright colors within the face. The facial features are exaggerated. 3. How are the artworks different? The artists subjects themselves are different. Some paintings are recognizable, then some are overly exaggerated in the eyes 4. How are the artworks framed? Almost all of the paintings were not framed they were left with their plain canvas however some were framed I am not sure how he chose which ones should be framed out not. 5. How are the artworks identified and labeled? The artist painted the portraits of popular celebrities almost everyone can identify with. They were labeled by the celebrities name 6. What is the proximity of the artwork to each other? Some were close to one another such as the political figures, some athletes, the paintings however were spaced within a foot or two of one another Political Figures
Unrecognizable
Recognizable by almost all
I thought the space was pretty cool the way they used it for this exhibition. I also really enjoyed this exhibitions theme and portraits. I like how they used blank white tall walls for these vibrantly colored big portraits and I like how the artist for the most part kept with the concept of keeping the background white and plain and having the art stand out on its own rather then putting a border around the portrait making it stand out even more then it already did. I like the use of the space and the way i kept hitting a wall of art so I had to walk into a new section filled of art works. The lighting was dim when I first walked into the exhibit giving almost a welcoming to the exhibition especially on the sketches of his artwork. Then the artists used bright lights in the big open space. Picture Analysis http://s1301.photobucket.com/user/lilymac334/slideshow/Art%20Exhibit%20Project%204?sort=6 1.Artist: Philip Burke Title of work: The Beatles Media: Oil on canvas Date: 2013 Size: HEIGHT: 48 in. (122 cm) WIDTH: 48 in. (122 cm) DEPTH: 2 in. (5 cm) Source of picture (URL): https://www.1stdibs.com/art/paintings/portrait-paintings/philip-burke-beatles-philip-burke-original-oil-painting/id-a_142628/ Description: The Beatles consisted of four musicians during the 1960’s. They were young at the time. Formal Analysis: Principles: Movement in the body language and positioning, The proportion of the body to the head is off. Emphasis on the exaggerated body features and the use of colors for the skin tone. Elements: Color, uses vibrant colors to create skin tones and shading, Uses lines in the paint strokes to create movement, Used dark colors to create texture in the hair, Bracketing: There is no particular allegory, metaphor or symbol I can perceive through this painting Interpreting: I think the artists was trying to interpret the Beatles when they were in their prime element. They look fun and hip with the color usage. they also look like they're enjoying themsleves in the moment. 2. Artist: Philip Burke Title of work: Tupac Shakur Media: Oil on canvas Date: February 5, 2006 Size: 48 x 60 inches Source of picture (URL): https://www.burchfieldpenney.org/collection/object:v2014-0919-001-tupac-shakur/ Description – This was originally a photo of Tupac when he was alive. He was a music singer/rapper. Tupac has a bandana on his head and has a hard face on. Formal analysis- Principles: Do not know the proportion if bigger or smaller to the body because it’s a portrait of the head alone. Emphasis on the facial features that are larger in proportion to others on the face. They are too big for the face. The lips, eyes and nose are large, the ears are small in proportion to the head. Elements: Uses color as the skin tone, uses bright/vibrant colors on areas of the face which would be naturally highlighted of light were shown on it from one side. Shading of dark colors on the neck where lighting would not be present. Uses the colors black to create a scruffy texture for the facial hair. Bracketing: I dont necessarily see anything other then maybe a symbol which also ties into the interpretation: I think that the artists exaggerated the lips on Tupac not only to exaggerated the facial features for any reason but because he was trying to spread an important message through his lyrics he sang about race and equality and such. This original photo of Tupac his head is in the same position but I believe his head positioning makes him stand stern and fierce. He stands tall and important. 3. Artist: Philip Burke Title of work: George W. Bush Media: Oil on canvas Date: 1/29/2002 Size: 36x36 inches Source of picture (URL): https://www.burchfieldpenney.org/collection/object:v2014-0919-003-george-w-bush/ Description – George W. Bush a President of the early 2000’s. He is talking and making a facial expression that expresses concern, confusion. He is in a suit because he must dress formal and proper when taking care f business. Formal analysis – Principles: There is movement in his face (you can tell by the direction of his wrinkles and his mouth quenching). His mouth and eyes in proportion to the size of his actual head is much smaller. Emphasis: On his nose because its red, he has no cheeks, the background and suit they use bold colors to make his face stand out. ‘ Elements: Use light colors for skin tone and use bold primary blues and reds for the background and his suit to make his head stand out. Use of line to express movement in Bushs’ face to create facial expressions. Use lines to create texture for Bushs’ eye brows and hair line, Bracketing-This facial expression we have seen many times from Bush and other Presidents and Political members who have given speeches of showing either confusion and concern or possibly trying to get a point across (an important message) Interpretation - (content) What do you think the artist was trying to say? The artists was copying a photo or image of Bush and I think in my own personal opinion it is Bush giving a speech. On what topic I am not sure but it looks like what he has to say is important and with the squinting of his eyes and pushed up nose and small mouth, hes in the middle of talking and almost shows remorse and concern, frustration

Module 11

Questions and Topics for Your Blog Posting: 1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above. I honestly chose the first two videos just at random there was no particular reasoning 2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. Matisse and Picasso: -believe drawing and painting are the same thing just with more/less materials -Matissa was a child protogy –followed after father -had a northern temperament -Picasso acted more impulsive -irreducable in each others work- innocence, naĂŻve in matisse intellectual approach in Picasso -painting represent the idea of things-picasso (cubism) -1912 picassos first collage -matisse “I sculpt like a painter” -I put everything I like in my painitins, too bad, things can work out for themselves – Picasso -“I want art of balance and purity that neither harasses nor worries” matisse says -keep harass and worries inside of him and presents the beauty -puppet painters -2 compassions are combined: the female nude and febrics-matisse -picasso made paintings to mock matisse and resemble his new wife -matisse said when you want to use color, you cant just walk in without thinking -matisse- painting always meant panic, struggle fear he used to try and deliberately instigate struggle -matisse peoples his world -objects are apart of his vocabulary, but infact the baroc chair -the objects that interest him are the worthless ones -3/4 of Picassos objects did not exist -woman are the engines that drives him the mystery -all done by memory/ imagination- Picasso -the painter and his model –matisse is one of his greats -matisse has an understanding of the human body -matisse chooses dark latin models -sleeping women open artists inspirations on feminity -matise- every week new beginnings -matisse work out the day then later rub out the work rubbed out result of work-next day had progressed wasn’t actually starting on something different -painting is an exorcism for Picasso -violence is everywhere -no evil in matisses paintings -in the work of a painter- anguish is a tool -picasso can also be seen as an expressionist -matisse said he goes to meet his feelings, he goes towards ecstacy -matisse lives in the country of color -matisse proclaims we should always see life as we did in childhood -uses sissors instead of drawing/painting cutouts resemble memories -picasso exploring ceramics The Mystical North: -Goya: created graphic drawings/images -black paintsings- devil worship, witches, black subjects, black colors -spain became power horse of modern art -modern atheism and ancient religion -Antoni GaudĂ’: organic sexy shapes, carnival spirit -Goyas opposite -inspired by gods natural world -clung to certainties of spains catholic past -cathedral religious climate was changing- new ideas were undermining ancient religion of the church -sexuality and spirituality -Pablo Picasso- first sexual expierence- carried out in his work- -artists looked else where for spiritual nourishment -surrealism: view the unconscious, territory of the mind -Dali called his pictures hand painted dream photographs -sense of time standing still just as dreams or death - architect was American and the Spanish were not happy about that 2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text? The reading did a basic understanding of Picasso and Matisses lives. Matisse kept away from wars and politics and it discussed how he loved the adventure of the human body (mostly women) and domestic interior. It discussed how his wife was involved in helping him create his master pieces and how when he had no choice but to stray away from his usual techniques, he took up creating art with cut up paper. Picasso was said to be a woman lover because he loved all sorts of women. The mention of the surrealist Salvador Dali’s The Persistence of Memory. 3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts? I liked the first film on Picasso and Matisse because it gave a broader and brighter understanding behind their travels, their relationships (some serious women lovers) and behind their art work. I did not know about Picassos depression and suicidal emotions and you sometimes cant tell with the vibrant works he did at the time. Although some were deep, dark and saddened as well. The Persistence of Memory art work was described it greater depth what it symbolized and represented.

Module 10

1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above. -I chose African art because that type of art has always stood out to me as very creative and inspirational. I think having a very different culture to celebrate is unique yet fascinating the way African art is incorporated in their celebrations of life. The different meanings behind their art and masks and the different way they use art –dancing, rituals, masks, pottery, their homes is really very interesting. 2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. African Art -art shown daily life, homes and utensils -defines expression in dress and hair styles -art especially important in African rituals -statues and mask and other objects once used in ceremonies –dance -many masks made of wood and straw -drawings in hard rock usually resemble animals --humans are also represented in rock art -farming and gathering replaced bunting -artistic achievements flourished 15-17 centuries -sculptures glorify rulers who are early Egyptian pharaohs seen to be devine -bronze casting -carved chairs resembling rulers power -Great Zimbabwe great political and economic system -walled enclosure –represented authority of rulers -fortress guards the valley -early Europeans saw African art as child like -primitine - portrayed a lack of understanding -perceptual and conceptual views -perceptual: based on the artists observation of visual reality; scenes and human subjects appear life like -conceptual: flows from artists imagination, expresses interior set of ideas rather then reality; power of symbolism -figure sculptures primarily found in west Africa -utilitarian objects have rich and symbolic meaning -creating objects in a traditional way --artists are respected community members -emphasis on copying and recopying others art -African art intertwined with the realms of magic and religion -animals, plants and stones are animated by unseen spirits -rituals gave humans control over such forces -art was believed to intervene actual course of life -an art object not supposed to represent a living human or animal but congier or spirit -used to worships and obsess spirits, gods and ancestors -mystic symbolism is most evident in 3D art sculptures and masks -some statues represent the power and wealth of rulers -other carvings represent the spirits and continuity of life -through the statues, the dead are among the living -in some regions, the elongated vertical forms suggest the ancestors remoteness from daily life -sculptures represent wild bush spirits these figures fed during sacrificial rituals intended to keep wild spirits at bay. -strong design elements in African culture; rigid frontal postures are common (suggest figures should be viewed faced on), side views carefully planned, texture is important, mask used in dance and other rituals, some are relatively naturalistic, others are highly stylized and abstract. -wooden masks usually embellished in feathers, metal, fur and other materials -many dance masks are remarkable best viewed in one element theatre and ritual -dancers move to a rhythm that puts them in touch with the forces of the universe. -among some African peoples, masks as a means of acquiring the power, powerful harvest, or to grantee good hunting, -animal masks are used to symbolize relationships between animals and the world of humanity -identify specific animals as courage or beauty -the masks allow the dancers to communicate with or even become one with gods or spirits -masks can also represent war like strength -masks were often a way to prepare for battle or to celebrate victory -village life styles are being influenced by growing urban centers -universalizing religions islam and Christianity replaced old beliefs -today masks that once had great power, now languish in museums -now art is used to flourish the market etc. African Art: Legacy of Oppression -usually see African art as static facing your frontally -masks worn by priests to connect to the dead- in Yambe culture –a sinking feelings in the pit of the stomach -huge range from central African art styles -give a visual vocabulary to use -systems of signs that can be read by the people of their society -artists of central Africa glorified the mothernes of their mothers, chiefness or their chiefs -forces of the land of the dead with actual containers of magical potions, revenge, masks -mask- white side healthy person black side sick person- masks like this were meant to scare you to treat handi capped people well because it can happen to you. Manhood to represct their elders -masks were meant to intimidate enemies In battle -masks could not protect against machine gun bullets -didn’t work against use westerners -Belgium massacre -congo- bullets= right hands, slavery 2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text? The readings in the text talks about the symbolic meaning behind different sculptures as well as masks. It talks about how art in Africa often serves as an agent to bring about some desired state of affairs, usually through contact with spirit powers. Among African art, the masquerade is the greatest involving costumes, sculptures, music, and movement. In western museums, African masks are commonly exhibited and admired as sculpture. But in Africa a mask is never displayed in public as an isolated, inert object. It appears only in motion, only as the head or face of a spirit being that has appeared in the human community. 3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts? I really liked the first video because I learned quite a few things that I did not know about. I also am saddened that the African art has changed and art isn’t just necessarily made for art and meaning but for economic purposes as the last thing discussed in the video. I like hot the videos went into depth about the ritualistic view of the masks and what they stand for and how they were used.

lilymac334's Hands slideshow on Photobucket

First two images are done with my dominant hand of my left hand

Second two photos are of my nondominant hand of my right hand 1. I have done a few sketches where my hands were used as the subject for my drawings and they have turned out well done. The hands a good subject matter to use because you can move the hand into many different ways giving different lines and shadows. 2. I used pencil because its less messy and easier to erase if I need to 3. I almost felt stressed out using my non-dominant hand. I wanted to take my dominant hand and just fix everything. I also felt like time was going so slow as I was trying to really focus and draw it making me super frustrated. 4. My first hand is slimmer then my second hand. Its more clear and the lines are more detailed as for the second hand, the image of the fingers are not positioned and as detailed in the cresses. I think it was successful or at least as good as it will get. 5. I probably wouldn’t use my non-dominant hand to create future works that at least need to be detailed and precise.

Module 9

1.Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above. I chose these two videos for no particular reasons other then I have heard of them many times. 2.For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. Velazquez : -at 24 yrs old became court painter to Phillip the 4th -king rewarded him with the order of Santiago- Stability -captured the moment, light, air things that are timeless-real time -in his entire life had only 1 friend king, 1 love his wife -free of artistic compromise or unwanted commissions -he studied for 2 yrs looked, copied studied Italian painting -painted a canvas a subject of mythology -theme as if he the painter were to give it substance snatching it from time and making it real-interested him in myths -he didn’t care for eternity -educated painter master of impressive library for the time -his works are based off of work of early age and other artists -he represents artlessness, nature, not arrangement - painted equestrian portraits -abstract painter, portraying ideas and ideals -has been called a realist more so an idealist -used his eyes minds view -what makes kings look different from each other? The human part -his subjects appear fixed, inner movement is spiritual -sense of irony, Sinicism, fatigue -how to balance the humanity of his subjects with their deformed exteriors? How to express the beauty beneth the hideous exterior while realistic depicting that exterior? Solution, suggest depth through interplay of soft and strong colors- through detail and lack of so the viewer can look at not inside the character. -human freaks embody something clean and pure more ideal then the sum of their parts -gift to capture the mean and the moment -required great human sympathy and insight Michelangelo : -where does the core of the human being exist? -uses drawings as a stock of ideas he can return to, keeps the paper, reuses it -interested in what sculpture means and expressing it in a different medium -sculpture od david first marble sculpture carved in Italy since antiquity -blend details taken from life with an abstract idealized version of the pose -reworks the figure till perfection -ceiling of the Sistine chapel -chose moment right before god gives adam the spark through touch -take the drawings from the back, multiple line that runs around the edge of the form, every musculature is slightly emphasized above its reality giving a sense of movement to it -working through mass entangled bodies and testing limits what he can portray through the body -crucifixion drawings near the end of his life explore conflicting feelings of hope and dread as he approached death. 3.How do the videos relate to the readings in the text? As discussed in the readings, Michelangelo established his reputation as a sculptor by 25 yrs old. The sculpture David reveals his debt to classical sculptures. Michelangelo knew how the body looked on the inside, how they worked, because he studied human anatomy and had dissected corpses. Made a figure through knowledge made of muscle, flesh and bone but actually through all marble. David is a Renaissance sculpture because of his expression on his face and the tension and energy that is missing from Greek art. Michelangelo working on the design sculptures for Juluis ll ‘s tomb, abandoned that project to create a painting (which Michelangelo didn’t like) now one of the most famous, best-known works the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. Velasquez uses light to create drama and emphasis, but light also serves here to organize and unify complex spaces. There was not much mentioned about Velasquez however. 4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts? The first film on Velazquez to me was dull, uninteresting was just simple. The most interesting of his works came at the end of the film where his works of art on those that are not considered beautiful came into conflict with his art. The description of how he would judge the appearance of the subject being painted and how he tried to disguise this ugliness was very interesting. The film on Michelangelo was great. I love his artworks and his sculptures. His many sketches and poems are incredibly done. The religious concept of the 16th chapel is beautifully done. He is overall amazing how meaningful all his work was to him makes the images he created 1000x more interesting.

Module 8

1.Explain why you selected the video you choose from the selection listed above. I chose to watch The Greek Awakening because I love Greek mythological stories and the artwork that represents such stories and the different Gods/Goddesses the Greeks believe in. 2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. The Greek Awakening: -in art dismembered figures meant in a realistic way -suddenly the statues become human gods -visible sign of new self confidence in architecture –example of acropolis -took a city of wood and turned it into a city of marble -distilled perfection in the columns still standing -to make the columns seem perfect actually buldge a little in the middle, compensation to make the art looks straight - since 1975 the Parthenon has been undergoing huge preservation work. (marble) -mixing ancient fragments with newly sculpted sections -human beings are at the center of existence - partheon represents that humanist movement -a temple a church and a mosk -6th century sculptures – attack by Persians - there was a temple before the Parthenon -north side of freeze consisted of 60 horseman -art at this time was consisted of craft and skill -craftsman be a free born citizen or a slave. - sculptures are saved from the plagued pollution of modern day Athens in museums -athena and poeidon in the corners of the pedimont (disputes figure pointing and emotions) -east pedimont filled with sculptures show the birth of Athena -invented theatre and dramas -birth of greek trajedy and comedy -think of it as potilics -talk to the city about the city during thetre was politics -first to develop humans paintings and architecture of humans in a realistic way Documentary - images dominate our lives: tell us how to behave, what to think, how to feel, mold and define us, - -images of the body that are unrealistic - the venus of vilindorf 25,000 yrs old unrealistic body of a woman - seguils can explain the shape of the venus (behavior of the chicks) - -the hunter gatherers exaggerated what mattered most - fatness would have been highly desirable - -Egyptian pyramids aret - not unrelisitic eggagerated images of body figures- just to be about the right size of actual body form - -use the body image that’s most clearest (angle) - measure using a grid applying same grid to images all over Egypt - images were shared by an obsession with consistency and value - its alos seen in their buildings/ pyramids - designed with absolute persission - –permanance and order - egypts images they wanted to last forever while nomads made statues to carry with them where ever - Ancient greeks were fixated on the body - Perfect body was an athletic body - They believed that gods took human form and had beautiful bodies - The mor eimpresive you can make you own body the more of a god you are perceived to be - Figurines were as close to life like and life size as they could get - Worsherpers would think the life like sculptures were actually gods and goddesses - Most rapid artistic revolution of all man kind - Greek and Egyptican ideas were being exchanged - Egypts rigid styles didn’t satisfy the greeks, the greeks like realistic statues - Studied the human body - Critian boy a mildstone in art carved from marble. Seen as too realistic, it was boring. - Capture an athletic body used rods at points where the body is ready to move, and split the body in half and across the middle- began to move figure in specific ways. One side of body in motion one side at rest - Top and bottom have been exaggerated by muscle –impossible for an actual person or athlete took look like the realistic sculpture - Impressionist exaggerated light and color rather then shape 3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text? In the book, it discusses about the little figure woman founded in Willendorf. Numerous Paleolithic female statuettes were found across the region carved of wood, ivory, and stone or modeled clay. These statues were assumed to be fertility figures used in a symbloc way encouraging pregnancy and childbirth. Egyptian paintings show similar works as stone. The body is stylized: head, eyes, torso and legs are each shown from the most advantageous viewpoint. In Greece, sculpture, painting and architecture were discussed as techne roughly “ things requiring a special body of knowledge and skill to make”. Greek art eveolved toward naturalistic representation. The bronze warrior an idealized, virile male body stands in a relaxed yet vigilant contrapposto- the pose the Greeks invented to express the potential for motion inherent in a standing human. Bronze was the favored material for freestanding sculptures. 4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts? I enjoyed the film the Great awakening of Greece, it gave good history on the art of ancient Greece however I personally was excited to see more sculpture and the techniques they used to develop these sculptures. I think the architecture of the stadium and the acropolis and Parthenon architecture was interesting because we now use these techniques of architecture all around the world. I really enjoyed the documentary on how realism of sculptures has advanced since ancient times in different locations. Shows how important and hard the technique of realism is to actually capture and how the human body is history has always felt connected with the imperfect/unrealistic exaggerated version of the body.

Module 7

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. Architecture: the science of Design -Skyscraper made up of steel skeletons holding up walls, ceilings and floors -skyscraper made up of 2 main parts, super structure and under ground sub structure -on main problem In constructing high rises is the wind. Wind is faster as the building gets higher. Buildings I high winds can sway a whole meter -Experts resort to wind tunnel microclimatic research, using models with an artificially created ventilator. Model of a building and its immediate surroundings with wind blown on them at different speeds. A probe with an ultra sensitive sensor link to a computer circulates above the model collects different points enabling experts to determine how the building and its surroundings will react to thrust of winds. -a high rise with flat surfaces and right angles act bad in bad winds -A smart apartment: computer linked to the houses various appliances. -because such products are at high cost its kept out of most consumers hands -voice command, start or stop (light clap on clap off) -Architecture has become a social art form -continue to innovate and create new spaces replacing traditional shapes with new forms – new material in concrete -used as a construction material back in Antiquity -regained popularity during last century -mixture of sand, pebbles or broken stone combined with cement and water -Joseph founded portlain cement most used today -set, hardening, resistance and volumetric stability -reaches resistance in 90 days -plain cement used for foundations -advantages reinforced concrete erect light buildings with daring forms, materials air tightness prevents it from cracking. Frank Gehry: Architecture as Art -a building can be a passive building or create an emotional response -sense of feeling in the building -modernist architecture as had been distorted by secular builders were cold and lifeless and hes going against that -building is something u put in a place and it eveolves over time, its use and space so its not a pure artwork like a painting but hes very inspired by painting. It is the highest level of human/ artistic expression. Hes seduced by it and when he cant think of anything he goes to museums -transforming buildings into sculptural objects -buildings are sculpture but not in the same sense each have their own domain or terrain. -Pays attention to natural light, use of unconventional materials, concern with functionality, -he breaks everything in parts -cant escape your signature 2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text? To be honest, the beginning of the reading basically focuses on the different types of building techniques that can be used which wasn’t exactly spoken about in the videos. One video talks about the steel frameworks, which makes up the “skeleton” of the skyscraper, which is also present in the book. The book also talks about reinforced concrete describing what its made of such as the video however the book talks more so about in depth of the reinforcement of cement and the video focuses on some reinforcement advantages. 3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of Architecture? Architecture does not necessarily have to mean the actual material building itself but it can be what makes the building as a whole, such as its features. Architecture is always evolving and changing. It does not have to be your standard building but a creation of your wackiest imagination. I think the Frank film was interesting I enjoyed how he strayed away from your average boring rectangular building and he added shapes and movement into his designs. I enjoyed his thought process and how he described his designs has as his own signature that he cant escape. The first film I understood the segments relating to the structural building and the use of cement as well as how they test the structure of the building against the wind. I was sort of thrown off by the technological uses that were implemented into the building at first but I am assuming that the word architecture means the outside and inside structure including its advancements that comes with it. 4. Why did you choose the films that you watched? I personally have always been a big fan of interior design and architecture so I figured I would watch the two videos that said in the title of them architecture.

Module 6 Video and book responses

1. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned. -Glass & Ceramics: -how to make glass -how to paint window glass and color using lead technique -Glacier makes small sketches then breaks the work up into small pieces (numbering them) then makes glass to fit that exact sketched piece then fits each glass into channeled led strips, then fasined and soughtered together covered with a water proof topping. -ceramics clay made of rock -different clays heated at different temps created different textured objects -plaster put in mild then fired -to make simple shapes in large quantities use dry pressing -glazing gives it the shine and look of glass -ceramics can be used for surgical reasons, muffler in automobiles, architecture -oxide reflect during the day infra red rays off the windows giving the building mirror like effect and the opposite occurs at night. -the intensity of sound in a room can be cut by half due to glass -laminated glass with catch fragments and keep it from shattering -Through the eyes of the sculpture -every stone has a different smell -sometimes they’ll just be called in to work on a hand, a foot or head not a full figure -check the stones sound to make sure its good make sure no cracks -everything has to work with the sculptures technicality -stone is gives dynamic of group and support the sculpture -use of bridges for stability -sculptures first sketched then comes alive in clay dies in plaster reborn in marble -artigano: crafts person or craftsman (usually associated with marble work) -the sculpture also uses feelings to sculpt life into their work 2. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text? The book starts off by explaining the 4 basic methods for making a sculpture: modeling, casting, carving and assembling and these examples were shown mostly in the video Through the eyes of the sculpture as different artists showed themselves at work. The making of human figure sculptures (little and life size). Chapter 12 relates more so with the video glass and ceramics and the objects created that can be used in daily lives. We watched as plates were made and glass and ceramic pots and stained glass. 3. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the topics: Sculpture, Installation, and Craft? I really enjoyed the videos, more so “through the eyes of the sculpture” because I really enjoy carving and using plaster and clay blocks. I personally love sculpting especially with the subtractive method taking a way from a big block and not being able to put it back together. I also liked the video on glass because I have always wondered how it was made (I knew from sand but how?) and the craft behind it is amazing.

Module 6 peer response to art projects

• My Response to Kayla Falters art projects -Project #1 Elements and Principles http://blogging-my-art.blogspot.com/2015/02/project-1_15.html?showComment=1425393647956#c6106970016252551624 -Project #2 Art Gallery Visit http://blogging-my-art.blogspot.com/2015/03/art-gallery-visit-1.html?showComment=1425394726210#c3845324541311034252 • My Response to Christopher Kasprzak -Project #1 Elements and Principles http://ckasprzak.blogspot.com/2015/02/httpi1341photobucketcomalbumso759kazbuk.html -Project #2 Art Gallery Visit http://ckasprzak.blogspot.com/2015/02/a-visit-to-albright-knox-art-gallery-in.html • What do you think about the process of reading your peers reflection? Do you find this to be a valuable in your learning? -I think the intake of feedback on any work you do enhances your learning ability. There are always little tweaks that can be made here and there that can perfect something or make it better even the slightest bit. Either way most of these art works that we have done so far in my opinion are based on our own opinions which can be seen differently through someone elses eyes so there is no complete right or wrong.

lilymac334's Module 5 Albright Knox Visit slideshow on Photobucket

A.)  Which artworks make an impact or impression on me?
Why?

1. One piece of art I found fascinating
was the Surrealism on TV, 1986 by
Robert Heinecken. The flashing on the three slide show projections of 200
different images of all sorts not just one category or theme of pictures of
that time was to me a brilliant idea. It captured the essence of times. It
captured moments even if they were facial expression from appeared to be new
cast woman, it felt like I was watching history unfold or as if I was living at
during those exact moments in time.

2. Another art piece called Mirrored Room, 1966 by artists Lucas
Samaras made of mirror on wood I found to be super interesting. I always wanted
to go into an all glass room like they would show on television that are
usually at carnivals and such. It gives almost an uneasy feeling like your
being watched but its only you seeing you from hundreds of angles. Also, seeing
a glass chair and table (me being a criminal justice major of course I thought
of an enclosed interrogation room) but I also felt like  doll in a glass house, like I felt out of
place.

B.)  Which artworks do I feel a connection with? Why?

1. Arturo Herrera, I have studied this artist back
in high school (watched the whole series of “play”) and I personally love all
of his ideas and artwork. His collages are beautiful. The episode from the
series of play placed on the wall of the museum just shows such how amazing his
techniques of mixing shapes and designs and overlapping them and the addition
of cartoons. I feel connected to his works of art, the cartoons bring me back
to my childhood and the squiggly designs he cuts out with lots of colors on
them brings out the fun and kid in myself.

2. Im a person who often uses color because im a very positive person. There
was something about this oil on canvas painting Body and Soul, 2007
created by Warren Isensee that drew me in. I felt a connection with the symmetrical
design and the colors made me feel some type of warmth and comfort.

C.)   Which artworks would I like to know more about?
Why?

1.     I would like to know more about the artist David
Adamo. His art pieces didn’t have labels on them so I am not sure what they are
called but this one piece of art caught my attention id like to look into. It
looks like a headless grooms man made of steel or tin and hes dangling by strings
like a puppet however his control system lays on the floor the strings all
tangled and some unattached anymore. It has a melancholy feel and there are
broken cookies on the floor like a wedding that was sweet now broke up.

2. I really enjoyed this artists oil on canvas
painting,
Dancer
in a Café
, 1912 by Jean Metzinger. I love
the texture and colors she uses to make some areas pop. The different shapes
and light shading. There is a beauty in this art that I want to learn more
about and see other works of art of hers.

lilymac334's My Logo Represetation slideshow on Photobucket

lilymac334's My Logo Represetation slideshow on Photobucket

1. For my logo, I knew I wanted
to do something with a tiger. I really love wildlife and im hoping to get into
a career where I can help rescue them so I though id create a logo representing
myself and what I love. I created a tiger with my name (represent Tiger Lily).
I created the tiger because its my favorite animals. It represents beauty and a
beast. It represents strength and something pure and rare. Something that
should not be domesticated but wild and free.

2. First I tried
to figure out which position I wanted the face of the tiger to be in. Do I want
it roaring, do I want its profile or its face on an angle or just facing
sideways. Once I picked the way I wanted the face to go, I wanted the Tiger to
still be looking forward even though its face is sideways so the on viewer
makes eye contact. I wanted to use oil pastels because I have a lot of fun
blending with them and its easy for me to make the fur have texture. Then once
done with the tigers face, I wanted the Tiger to stand out so I added
watercolor pencil to the background just to liven it up a bit. Then I add my
name Lily with what you can consider either jungle leave mark cuts in the name
or claw scratches its up to you. I wanted the name to be bold so that what
represented me the most (my name) stood out. I used red because it contrasts
well with the Tiger being orangeish.
3. The most
important discovery that I made about my logo is that the image I drew
represents me successfully. I could have done the background a little different
instead of doing multiple colors (looks a little cheesy) but I the focal point
is the tiger and my name and I made both pop out. Its supposed to draw you in
and I think it does. Im happy with it overall!

4. The most
important information I learned was that logos are trial and error. It takes a
number of sketches and attempts at making a logo that really makes an object
pop and catch the consumer’s attention. You want something strong, simple that overall
capture the essence of the business. You throw out there a pitch which an
introduction piece (usually always needs tweaking, gets criticized and
completely redesigned) but its an idea. Sometimes a logos image just needs to
be edited and tweaked in little areas that will makes a huge difference of
selling the product successfully.
