Module 12
1. Explain why you selected each of the TWO videos you choose from the selection listed above.
I chose these two videos at random, no specific reasoning
2. For each video list/discuss the key concepts you learned.
Andy Warhol:
-Ten Lizes same image repeated
-1960 commercial artists, became a famous painter
-took newspaper clips and enlarged with a projector-used stencils and acrylic paints
-series on Marilyn Monroe face
-picked the most pervasive images- cropped them, simplified them, colored them, uncolored them and multiplied them
-Elizabeth taylor- Cleopatra
-to send an photo through a silk screen the original image must be enlarged several times, the contrasts can then be heightened or turned down at will, originally made of silk now made of a mesh
-silk screen printing enabled him a brilliant idea
-nearly an image, and an image of an image
-a consumer product like coca-cola or campells coup
-Jackie Kennedys series
-obsessed by the idea of celebrity

Uncertainty: Modernity and Art:
-art has its own memory of itself

-modern art responds to modern life
-1930s Nazism uncertainty seen as a sickness
-feeling we live with in modern life is doubt; nothing is pure, nothing lasts, can never be sure what we are
-abstract art is open ended- no rules
-1960s consumerism
-no values except the values of the free market
-hyper present; china
-chinas economy grows 10% a yr
-modern art communicates chaos, anxiety, and above all, uncertainty.
3. How do the videos relate to the readings in the text?
The artists of popculture found visual material in the mundane, mass-produced objects and images such as comic books, advertising, billboards, and packaging. For example Andy Warhol who created an enormous output of prints, paintings, and sculptures. He directed the production of many avant- garde films, featuring actors with names such as Viva, Ultra Violet, and International Velvet. To get to where modern art is today, Art has passed through many stages and has explored many different types of styles of art. Western ideas about art were being taken up in the 19th century and were adopted by many cultures around the world.
4. What is your opinion of the films? How do they add depth to understanding of the readings and art concepts?
I liked the film on Andy Warhol however I found his work to be sort of blanned. I felt as though he could have gone even further with his works other then just taking someone elses original photo then multiplying it on silk screen and then putting paint on it. I think in my own personal opinion the work is boring and very simply done. I did like however how he took clips and glimpses from newspaper clippings and magazines and blew those images up. It is kind of like keeping history and consumer goods alive. I think the film went into more depth on how different cultures explored at different times the way to modern art. It explored Natzism and how China explored modern art.
